On April 3rd 2022, The Reigning WWE Champion Brock Lesnar will take on The Reigning WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns on the second night of WWE Wrestlemania 38. With both World Championships on the line, this will presumably be the main event of The Grandest Event of the year.
This will be their 6th One on One match in WWE. While some fans say that this feud is boring and should not still be happening after 7 years, others are praising it, as we are seeing the peak of Roman Reigns career and some of the best character work Brock Lesnar has ever done.
Here is why I believe that this match will be their biggest and best yet.
Their Previous Matches
When Roman Reigns won the 2015 Royal Rumble Match, fans were booing him out of the building, this was due to fans feeling like Roman Reigns was being shoved down their throats by the WWE. It was clear at the time that Roman was the hand picked "Top Star" of the WWE and the fans didn't want that to happen. Roman Reigns hadn't gotten "over" organically as a singles star, he was still pretty fresh off of The Shield's breakup.
As he had won the Rumble, it meant he got to face the WWE World Heavyweight Champion at Wrestlemania 31, The Beast Incarnate Brock Lesnar. When the match happened, the fans were still booing Roman Reigns, but a lot of them had come to terms with what was going to happen. It was obvious that Roman Reigns was going to win and reach the top of the mountain in WWE, while completely ignoring fans feedback.
However, for the first time ever, in the middle of a Wrestlemania Main Event. We saw Seth Rollins cash-in his Money In The Bank briefcase to add himself to the match. At that point both men were completely out of energy and beaten up, which allowed Seth Rollins to pickup the win by pinning Roman Reigns.
Brock and Roman wouldn't face in a one on one scenario again until 3 years later at Wrestlemania 34 in 2018. Brock Lesnar was walking in as the WWE Universal Champion and once again the fans thought this was predictable, everything was leading to Roman Reigns picking up the win and finally beating Brock Lesnar. However, Brock Lesnar won. The fans didn't know how to feel. The Part Timer who doesn't show up too often, just defeated the unlikable Hero who nobody wanted to see as champion.
19 days later at The Greatest Royal Rumble, Lesnar and Reigns faced inside a Steel Cage. Brock Lesnar won yet again. Finally at SummerSlam 2018, Roman Reigns defeated Brock Lesnar in a one on one match for the first time and became WWE Universal Champion.
Unfortunately Roman Reigns had to relinquish the title shortly after and straight away Brock Lesnar won it again in a match against Braun Strowman.
At WWE Crown Jewel 2021 in October, they faced again. But things were very different...
Roman Reigns is in God Mode
Once the COVID-19 Pandemic started in 2020, leaving Wrestlemania 36 unable to go on in front of fans, Roman Reigns decided to stay safe and not work while the world went into chaos. He wanted to protect his family as well as himself who would be classed as vulnerable due to his medical history.
When he returned to the WWE 5 months later, he had a different attitude. Something was wrong but nobody knew what. Then it was revealed that Roman Reigns had aligned himself with Paul Heyman. Brock Lesnar's Manager. Brock wasn't around at this point, he hadn't been seen since Wrestlemania where he lost to Drew McIntyre, behind closed doors.
With Heyman at his side, Roman Reigns had elevated to a different level with this new heel persona. He became The Head Of The Table, The Tribal Chief and most importantly, the greatest Universal Champion of all time. A year after winning the Universal Championship, Roman Reigns successfully defended it at SummerSlam 2021 against John Cena. After the match, The Beast Returned.
Brock Lesnar is in Beast Mode
Ever since Brock Lesnar returned to WWE at SummerSlam. he has had a different aura around him. After a short stint with Paul Heyman, Paul betrayed Lesnar at Crown Jewel 2021 to continue working for Roman Reigns. That is how Roman Reigns won their latest encounter.
Now Brock Lesnar is on his own, thriving. Without a doubt, one of the two top stars in WWE today, his new Face persona of a good guy who will literally kill everyone is some of the best character work Lesnar has ever done on his own. After winning the WWE Royal Rumble this year, and then winning the Elimination Chamber match to become WWE Champion, Brock is leaving a path of destruction behind him every single week.
With this new edition of Lesnar and the God Mode version of Roman Reigns, it is unclear which of these goliaths will come out on top at Wrestlemania.
Roman Reigns has been undefeated for over 800 days in singles competition and has defeated every former Universal Champion in WWE history. Brock Lesnar has not been defeated cleanly (without outside interference or cheating) since his loss to Drew McIntyre at Wrestlemania 36 in 2020.
This is why this match means everything.
